Advair (Fluticasone)
Description
Advair is the brand name for the drug that contains active ingredients of Fluticasone Propionate and Salmeterol. Fluticasone Propionate is a steroid and Salmeterol is a bronchodilator. Salmeterol eases your breathing. Advair prevents asthma attacks. If the patient is already having asthma then they should not use this drug. Other conditions like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and chronic bronchitis are treated with Advair. Advair Diskus comes in combination of 100/50, 200/50, and 500/50. In the the first number denotes the strength of Fluticasone Propionate and the second number denotes Salmetrol strength in mcg. Advair HFA aerosol comes in strengths of 45/21, 115/21, and 230/21.
Recommendations
Advair comes in two forms as Advair Diskus a powder form and Advair HFA an aerosol form. Advair Diskus comes with an inhaler device that is preloaded with the medications. You will be using this inhaler through your mouth only. After using the oral route for inhaling the Advair Diskus wash your mouth with water without swallowing. For patients above 12 years the usage of Advair Diskus is twice daily. Advair 100/50 or 250/50 is used daily. The maximum dosage recommended is 500/50 daily. Do not exceed this limit. For patients between 4 and 11 years the recommended dosage is the use of 100/50 Advair Diskus twice daily in the morning and the evening. Make sure that there is a gap of 12 hours between successive usages.
Precautions
Salmeterol might worsen the asthma condition if is already exists and the patient might even die. So do not Advair if the patient is already having asthma. If you have any allergies or heart disease it is important to reveal this information to the doctor who is treating you. If your conditions are getting worse on using Advair contact your doctor immediately. Patients with weak immune system, glaucoma, diabetes, osteoporosis, thyroid disorder, high BP, and epilepsy should avoid using Advair. Growth in children is also affected by Advair. Inform your doctor if you see that your child is not getting the normal growth while using Advair. Side effects like dry mouth, sore throat, deepened voice, nausea, vomiting, and headache might occur in some patients.
