Aldactone is the brand name for the generic drug spironolactone. This drug is a potassium sparing diuretic. It prevents the potassium levels from getting too low. Drug is used in the treatment of a condition in which there is too much of aldosterone in your body. Aldosterone is responsible for the salt and water balance in your body. Aldactone is available in strengths of 25 mg, 50 mg, and 100 mg. The 25 mg tablet is available in bottles of 100, 500, and 2500. The 50 mg tablets are available in bottles of 100 and cartons of 100 unit dose.
Drug is used in the treatment of primary hyperaldosteronism. It could be short term treatment or long term maintenance treatment. In short term treatment to test the condition the recommended dosage is 400 mg for four days. If you are to take some other tests for other conditions, chances are that the test results might be abnormal. Hence it is necessary that you inform the doctor about taking Aldactone. If Aldactone is used in the treatment of hypertension it is advisable to take this medication without failure or discontinuity.
Taking over dose of this medication might lead to symptoms like skin rashes, vomiting, drowsiness, diarrhea, nausea, and confusion. If you experience any of these symptoms seek immediate medical attention. These side effects are more predominant if you are taking alcohol. Hence it is better to avoid alcohol when taking Aldactone. Avoid talking milk products that are low in sodium and high in potassium. Aldactone might affect your motor skills and your thinking. Hence it is better not to drive when you are under the influence of this medication.
Some of the side effects of taking Aldactone are fatigue, difficulty in breathing, stomach pain, irregular heartbeat, numbness, drowsiness, vomiting, skin rashes, and headache. Consult your doctor on other side effects that might occur due to Aldactone.
