Altace (Ramipril)
Description
Altace is the brand name for the generic drug Ramipril. It is used in the treatment of high blood pressure and heart failures. It is available in the form of capsules in strengths of 1.25 mg, 2.5 mg, 5 mg, and 10 mg.
Recommendations
The initial dose for treating high blood pressure is 2.5 mg if the patient is not using diuretics. The dosage can be adjusted based on the response to the initial dose. The maintenance dose could be between 2.5 mg to 20 mg per day and it can be given as a single dose or a divided dose for two times. A diuretic is added if the patient's blood pressure cannot be controlled with Altace alone. When you are on Altace, your blood pressure, functions of the kidney and liver are to be checked. When you are treated for high blood pressure, it is necessary that you continue using the medicine as high blood pressure might not have symptoms.
When the treatment is for post-infarction the starting dose is 2.5 mg which is given two times a day. At this dose, if the blood pressure decreases then the dosage is decreased to 1.25 mg twice daily. The dosage can be increased after three weeks until you reach the target dosage of 5 mg twice daily.
The contents of the Altace capsule can also be sprinkled in a sauce of your choice and consumed entirely.
Precautions
Altace should not be used if you are pregnant. Consult your doctor if you are planning to become pregnant before taking Altace. Do not use Altace when you are drinking alcohol. It is better to avoid alcohol. Do not use potassium supplements or salt substitutes when you are on Altace. If you are allergic to ramipril or any other ACE inhibitors like capoten, lotensin, vasotec, aceon, accupril and so on do not use Altace. If you are having any kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, connective tissue disease or had any allergic reaction, it is better to reveal that to your doctor so that they can reconsider whether to use Altace or not.
