Ampicillin is an antibiotic that is used to treat different types of infections. Penbritin is like penicillin. Infections like respiratory infections, gastrointestinal infections, urinary infections, genital infections, and gonorrhea are treated with the help of Ampicillin. It is also used to treat inflamed membranes in the spinal cord which is also called as meningitis.
Ampicillin capsules can be taken 2 hours after meals or half an hour before meals. If you are taking any oral suspension, make sure that the content is well shaken before use. Do not take two doses of Penbritin if you ever happen to miss a dose. Take the doses of Ampicillin at evenly spaced out time in a day.
500 mg is the recommended dosage for adults for every six hours if they are using it for treating genital infections, urinary or gastrointestinal tract infections. For treating gonorrhea it is recommended to take 3500 mg as a single dose along with 1000 mg of probenecid. For treating respiratory infections, 250 mg every 6 hours is recommended. For children the dosage depends on their weight. You have to consult your doctor for the recommended dosages.
If you are treating strep throat with Penbritin, you have to complete the cycle prescribed to you by your doctor even if you feel better.
People who are allergic to penicillin and other antibiotics should consult their doctor before taking Ampicillin as it is also an antibiotic. If you get any allergic reaction after taking Penbritin it might be a severe reaction. Watch for any skin reactions, shortness of breath, sore throat, fever or wheezing after taking Ampicillin. If you see any of these contact your doctor immediately.
Some of the side effects of using Ampicillin might be nausea, itching, rashes, sore tongue, fever, and diarrhea.
If you are taking any oral contraceptives while taking Ampicillin, the contraceptives might not work for you. You have to look for other contraception methods. People who are diabetic might face false positives when they are on Penbritin. You have to consult your doctor about taking Ampicillin if you want to test for blood sugar.
The effect of other drugs like Atenolol, Mefloquine, Allopurinol, Chloroquine, and oral contraceptives are altered when you are taking Ampicillin. Hence it is necessary to consult your doctor if you are taking these medications along with Penbritin.
