Armour ( Thyroid )
Armour is the brand name for the Armour Thyroid tablets that are prepared naturally by using the porcine thyroid glands. The characteristic odor is present in this medicine. It has 9 mcg of liothyronine and 38 mcg of levothyroxine per grain. Ingredients like microcrystalline cellulose, calcium stearate, sodium starch glycolate, opadry white, and dextrose are present as inactive ingredients in the medicine. Armour Thyroid is used in the treatment of hypothyroidism. It is not used in the recovery phase in patients with subacute thyroiditis. Various types of euthyroid goiters are also treated with this medicine.
The dosage of Armour thyroid given to the patients varies with the patientís response to the tablet and on the laboratory tests done to determine levels of TSH, T3, and T4. Oral medication is the form that is recommended for most of the people. Only in certain cases intravenous injection is used for the medicine. The medication is not given as intramuscular injection as the absorption of the medication is very poor in that type of injection. The dosage of the medicine has to be adjusted within the first month of taking the medication based on the response of the patient to the medication.
For treating patients with hypothyroidism the dosage is started with 30 mg / day and it is incremented by 15 mg for every 2 or 3 weeks. The dosage given to the patient is reduced if the patient experiences chest pain which could be due to lack of oxygen. For most of the patients the dosage would be 60 to 120 mg per day. In patients with malabsorption even high dosage up to 180 mg per day would be ineffective. If the patient is getting enough dosage of the medication then the TSH and the T4 levels would be normal in about 2 to 3 weeks time.
Adverse reaction on taking this medication is very rare but there are drug interactions possible in the patients who take other medications. Patients who take insulin should be monitored closely during the initial phase of taking the medication. Patients who are taking medications for preventing blood clots might be required to reduce the dosage of that medicine to get full effect of Armour Thyroid.
