Astelin is a nasal spray for the treatment of symptoms of the allergic and infectious diseases of the nose (rhinitis). The main active component of the drug is Azelastin, a strong blocker of the histamine receptors.
This drug provides an antihistaminic, anti-allergic, and membrane-stabilizing action. It reduces capillary permeability and exudation. A distinctive peculiarity of this medicine is a prolonged antiallergic pharmacological action. When the medication penetrates in the blood, it almost instantly inhibits synthesis or release of the chemical mediators which take part on early and late staged of the allergic reactions.
The weakening of the symptoms of the allergic rhinitis develops within 3 hours after the intranasal use. The patient experiences the reduction of the itching and stuffiness in the nose, sneezing, and discharge of mucus. The effect is gained maximum in 4-5 hours and lasts for 12 hours.
Astelin nasal spray should be used until the complete disappearance of the symptoms of the allergic rhinitis. During the long-term treatment there is no addiction in patients and the drug does not change its efficiency in the removal of the disease symptoms.
Before using the spray it is necessary to clean the nose from mucus. Then the spray is injected by one dose into each nasal passage two times a day, and this corresponds to the daily dose of Azelastin 0,56 mg. Injecting the drug it is necessary to hold your head straight in order to avoid penetrating the medication into throat.
If 2 times a day are not enough for you and you breathe with difficulty, it is allowed using the spray 3 times a day until the improvement of your condition.
The maximally allowed length of the uninterrupted use of Astelin nasal spray is 6 months.
Astelin nasal spray is contraindicated for the use by patients with allergy to Azelastin, or children under 6 years old.
Before using the spray during pregnancy it is needed to consult your doctor and make sure than this is safe.
The medical intervention is not necessary if the following side effects appear: irritation, dryness, burning or itching of the mucous membrane of the nasal cavity. The improvement of the rhinitis symptoms will reduce the frequency of the side effects.
If the patient has allergic reaction after the use of the nasal spray, it is necessary to go to a doctor for consultation.
