Atarax (Hydroxyzine)
Description
Atarax is the brand name for the generic drug Hydroxyzine. It is sold in many other brand names including Vistaril. Atarax is used in the treatment of allergic conditions like contact dermatitis and hives. Atarax is basically an anti-histamine. It reduces anxiety and it used to prevent and treat nausea caused by motion sickness. Atarax is used for other purposes as necessary by your doctor. Atarax is available in doses of 10 mg, 25 mg, and 50 mg.
How to use
For treating anxiety in adults a dosage of 50 mg to 100 mg four times a day is used. In children below 6 years a 50 mg dose is divided into equal doses in a day and given. For treating allergies in adults 25 mg four times a day or three times a day is given. In children, for treating allergies 50 mg is divided into equal doses in a day. Atarax is not effective if you are using it for more than 4 months. Consult your doctor if your condition persists even after 4 months upon using Atarax.
Take the prescribe dosage of Atarax with or without food. If taken with food it might reduce any stomach irritation. If you miss a dose, and if it is time for the next dose take the next dose. Do not take double dose to compensate for the missed dose.
Precautions
You should avoid using Atarax if you are using sodium oxybate as it might slow your breathing and might increase your sleeping time. If you are during the first 3 months of your pregnancy, you should not use Atarax. It is necessary that you reveal to your doctor if you are taking alcoholic beverages or suffer from glaucoma, urinary problems or a prostate disease. Inform your doctor if you have asthma or a blood disease. Interaction of some other drugs with Atarax is possible. Hence it is necessary that you disclose all the medicines that you take to your doctor so that they can adjust the dosage or prescribe some other medicine for your condition. Atarax may cause drowsiness. Hence it is advisable not to take that medication while you are driving. Dry mouth is another common side effect of taking Atarax. If serious side effects like difficulty in breathing, chest tightness and swelling of lips and mouth occur, contact your doctor immediately.
