Bactrim is the brand name for the generic drug combination sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim. This drug is used mainly in treatment of infections caused by bacteria. Ear infections, traveler's diarrhea, urinary tract infections, and bronchitis are treated using Bactrim. Bactrim tablets come in strengths of 80 mg of trimethoprim and 400 mg of sulfamethoxazole. The double strength Bactrim DS comes in strength of 160 mg of trimethoprim and 800 mg of sulfamethoxazole. These tablets come in bottles of 100 and 500.
For treating adults with urinary tract infections 1 Co-trimoxazole DS tablet can be given for every 12 hours. This treatment should be given for about 2 weeks. Instead of 1 Bactrim DS, two Bactrim tablets can also be given in a single dose.
In case of children 40 mg / kg of sulfamethoxazole and 8 mg / kg of trimethoprim is used for one day which can be divided into equal dosages for 12 hours each.
It is necessary that you complete a full course of medication and do not stop the course in-between. Inform your doctor if you have any conditions like kidney disease or liver disease, asthma, folic acid deficiency, and AIDS. It is better to inform even if you are pregnant before taking Bactrim.
Allergic reactions like skin rashes, swelling of hands, feet, tongue, face, lips, and throat might occur. If you have these reactions do contact your physician immediately. Some of the other side effects that can be found are cough, shortness of breath, irregular heart rate, fatigue, body aches, pale skin, nausea, stomach pain, jaundice, dizziness, and joint pain. Consult your doctor for any other side effects that might occur to you as a result of taking Bactrim.
Patients taking medications like phenytoin, diuretic, blood thinners, and ACE inhibitors should inform the physician about taking those medications as it might interact with Co-trimoxazole.
