Bactroban (Mupirocin)
Description
Bactroban is the brand name for the generic drug mupirocin. This drug is used in the treatment of infection on the skin caused by bacteria such as impetigo. It is also used for other purposes as and when decided by the physician. Bactroban ointment 2% is available in tubes of 22g.
Recommendations
Generally Bactroban is applied 3 times a day for effective treatment of bacterial infections on the skin. It is recommended that you complete the full cycle prescribed by the physician to get complete cure of the bacterial infections. When applying Bactroban, make sure you avoid applying to your eyes, nose, and mouth accidentally as it is not formulated for use in mucosal surfaces. Wash with water if applied accidentally to those areas. Apply in thin layers with minimal amount of Bactroban. You will see good improvement in your skin condition upon using Bactroban for 3 to 5 days. If you don't see any improvements contact your doctor for alternative medicines.
Precautions
Bactroban passes on to the breast milk, hence it is advisable not to use Bactroban when you are nursing your baby. Consult your doctor if you are breast feeding your baby regarding the use of Bactroban. People who are allergic to Bactroban should avoid using it. Do not use Bactroban on open wounds and cuts. More absorption of Bactroban into your system might damage your kidney. If you experience any unusual developments in your skin, like peeling, itching, dryness, or irritation, stop applying this medicine and contact your doctor immediately. Do not use other topical medications in the same area where you apply Bactroban. Other medications might affect the way Bactroban is absorbed. Studies have revealed that there is no harm to the fetus if Bactroban is used by pregnant women. However consult your doctor before using it if you are pregnant.
