Clarinex is the brand name for the generic drug desloratadine. Desloratadine is used to reduce the effect of histamine that produces itching, sneezing etc. It is an antihistamine. Some people might get runny nose, sneezing, and watery eyes due to some allergies. These are controlled by antihistamines like Clarinex.
Do not crush or chew Clarinex tablets when you are taking them. If you are taking solution form of Desloratadine make sure you are using the measuring device that comes along the package to measure the solution. Do not use the general teaspoon to take the Clarinex solution.
The recommended dosage for adults and children above 12 years is a 5mg tablet per day. If you are taking solution then 10mL (5 mg) is the recommended dosage. For children from 6 years to 11 years 2.5 mg tablet or 5mL of solution is recommended. For children from 1 year to 5 years 1.25mg or 2.5mL is recommended per day. For children from 6 months to 11 months 2mL or 1 mg is recommended per day.
If you are allergic to desloratadine then you should not take Clarinex. It is better to inform your doctor if you are taking drugs for kidney problems and liver problems. If you are allergic to any drugs, that should also be informed to your doctor. Children below the age of 2 years should not take Desloratadine unless otherwise it is exclusively given by the doctor under supervision. Some form of Clarinex that disintegrates like the Desloratadine Reditabs might have phenylalanine which is not good for children. It is possible that Clarinex might pass on to the baby through breast milk if you are nursing the baby. Hence it is better to avoid Clarinex when you are nursing. You might experience fast heart rate if you have taken over dose of Clarinex. If you have these symptoms contact your doctor immediately.
