Crestor is the brand name for the generic durg Rosuvastatin Calcium. This drug comes under a group called 'statins' that are used to reduce the bad cholesterol, LDL, in our body. It also reduces the triglycerides and increases the good cholesterol, HDL. Crestor is available in tablet form and in strengths of 5 mg, 10 mg, 20 mg and 40 mg. The 5 mg tablet is in yellow color while the other tablets are in Pink color.
Crestor is used in adults and children above the age of 10 to reduce LDL and triglycerides in blood.
Dosages of 5 mg to 40 mg can be given as a single dose in a day. The usual starting dose will be 10 to 20 mg per day. Upon taking this medication the cholesterol levels should be checked every 2 weeks or one month and the dosage can be adjusted thereafter. Usually the goal set for the reduction in cholesterol can be achieved by using 20 mg maximum. In some rare cases 40 mg per day is used. While taking Crestor it is also necessary that you follow a diet that helps in lowering your cholesterol level. This will make your Crestor more effective in reducing the cholesterol level.
People with liver disease or kidney problems should discuss that with their doctor before taking Crestor. It is necessary that you stop this medication if you are pregnant or breast-feeding your baby. Breakdown of muscle tissues and kidney failure is a rare side effect of taking Crestor. If you experience any unusual muscle pain, or if the urine color is dark, do contact your doctor right away. Liver damage due to increased triglycerides is possible if you drink alcohol while you are taking Crestor. So, do avoid taking alcohol. If you are using any other medications while taking Crestor, do inform that to your doctor as he might adjust the dosage of Crestor according to your requirement.
