Detrol LA is the brand name for Tolterodine Tartrate. This is the active ingredient in this drug and it is a white crystalline powder. The inactive ingredients of this drug include hypromellose, medium chain triglycerides, gelatin, sucrose, oleic acid, ethylcellulose and starch. This tablet is available in 2 mg and 4 mg in bottles of 30 tablets and 90 tables. The imprints in these tablets contain propylene glycol, shellac glaze, simethicone, and titanium dioxide. The tablets are printed in white ink with a symbol and the number 2 or 4 depending on the tablet strength. The 2 mg tablets are blue green in color and the 4 mg tablets are blue in color.
Detrol LA is an extended release tablet used in the treatment of urinary incontinence and overactive bladder. Since this tablet is an extended release tablet it should be taken as a whole and not crushed or split or chewed. 4 mg of Detrol LA is the recommended dosage daily. If the patient is having adverse reactions then the dosage might be reduced to 2 mg daily. In patients who have problems in renal function the recommended dosage is only 2 mg daily. It is necessary to store Detrol LA in controlled room temperature and to protect from light.
One of the most reported side effects of taking Detrol LA is dry mouth. The other side effects of taking this drug Detrol LA are abdominal pain, constipation and headache. In some patients urinary retention, dry eyes, and abnormal vision are reported. Palpitations, tachycardia, diarrhea, memory impairment, confusion, hallucinations and disorientation are also reported in some patients. Since vision is blurred and dizziness is felt in some patients, it is advised that patients should restrict their activities that might get affected with these side effects. The drug’s effect might affect your activities hence it is necessary to avoid such activities. If the Detrol LA is taken by pregnant women the fetal weight might get reduced. Although this is not confirmed, it is advised not to take this medication while pregnant. In nursing mothers, the baby did not gain much weight when the nursing mothers took Detrol LA. So it is better to discontinue taking the tablet Detrol LA or discontinue nursing.
