Flagyl is the brand name for the generic drug metronidazole. This drug is used as an antibiotic, antibacterial, and antiprotozoal. Any infections in our body caused by amoeba are also treated with Flagyl. Flagyl is available in strengths of 250 mg, 375 mg, 500 mg, and 750 mg (extended release). Other brand of metronidazole is Protostat.
In the treatment of anaerobic bacterial infections the recommended dosage is 500 mg for every six hours for a 70 kg adult. The recommended dosage is about 7.5 mg per kg of weight in adult. Make sure that the dosage in a day does not exceed 4000 mg. the duration of the treatment is about 7 to 10 days.
For treating serious amebiasis, the recommended dosage is 750 mg thrice a day. This treatment is to be continued for 5 to 10 days. In case of children the recommended dosage is about 35 to 50 mg per kg of weight. This dosage should be divided in to three doses and given for about 10 days.
Allergic reactions to taking Flagyl are also found in some patients. So if you have any allergic reactions like swelling of your face, lips, tongue or throat then you should contact your doctor immediately. Side effects like diarrhea, pain during urinating, numbness, chills, sores in your mouth, and seizures are also found in some patients. These are some serious side effects of taking Flagyl. Some other side effects like dry mouth, sore tongue, headache, stomach pain and vaginal itching are also found. If you find any of the side effects while taking Flagyl do contact your doctor immediately. Do not take alcohol while you are taking Flagyl. Taking alcohol might lead to other side effects like fast heartbeat, seizures, nausea, and numbness.
If you are already taking medications like Tagamet, Dilantin, Coumadin (blood thinners), Tskalith and Antabuse then dosage adjustments of Flagyl might be needed. It is better to disclose this information to the doctor when you are prescribed Flagyl. If you are already taking any other medication it should be disclosed to your doctor before taking any other new medication.
