Flovent (Fluticasone Propionate)
Description
Flovent is the brand name for the generic drug fluticasone propionate. It is sold in brand names like Flovent HFA and Flovent Diskus. This drug is sold in the form of Inhalation Aerosol. This drug is available as aerosols of 44 mcg, 110 mcg, and 220 mcg. This drug is used for treating asthma especially in maintenance treatment.
Recommendations
Flovent inhalation aerosol is used in maintenance treatment of asthma. For acute conditions aerosol form is not used. This drug is also used for oral corticosteroid therapy. But it is decided by your doctor. Oral inhalation is recommended for patients above 12 years of age. Once the treatment has been started the patient will get some relief within the next 24 hours. It is only after about 1 or 2 weeks the maximum benefit of using the medicine is got. Once the asthma condition is stable with the treatment of Flovent, the dosage might be reduced to the lowest possible, so that you can avoid unwanted side effects of using this drug.
The dosage recommended for a patient to use Flovent is based on the previous treatment that was given to them. If the previous treatment was with bronchodilators alone then a recommended dosage of 88 mcg is used twice daily. The highest dosage recommended for such patients is 440 mcg twice daily. If the patients have used inhaled corticosteriods earlier then the recommended dosage is 88 to 220 mcg twice daily and the maximum is 440 mcg twice. If they have used oral corticosteriods then 880 mcg twice daily is recommended and that the maximum dosage allowed.
Precautions
Children below 4 years should not use Flovent without consulting the doctor. The active ingredient in Flovent passes on to the breast milk. Hence it is necessary that you inform your doctor if you are breast feeding your baby. Using Flovent for long term might lead to osteoporosis. Hence it is necessary that you get enough amounts of vitamin D and calcium in your diet.
