Gentamicin Eye Drops
Description
Gentamicin eye drops is used to treat eye infections caused by bacteria. This medicine is also available in other names like Genoptic, Genoptic S.O.P., Ocu-Mycin, Garamycin Ophthalmic, Gentak, and Gentacidin. Apart from treating eye infections, this medicine is also used for other purposes. Usually Gentamicin eye drops is used after an intravitreal eye injection.
How to use
Gentamicin eye drops is used every 4 to 8 hours depending on the type of infection in the eye. It is better to use the eye drops as prescribed in the label or according to the instructions given by your doctor. Kindly clarify with your doctor if you do not understand any of the points. If you are using any other eye drops too you have to wait for 5 minutes before using the other medicine. After applying the eye drops close your eyes for a minute to get the maximum benefit out of it. Instructions on how to apply the eye drops are usually available with the product or consult your doctor for that.
If you have missed a dose of Gentamicin then you can apply it immediately if it is not time for the next dose. If it is time for the next dose you can continue with the next dose instead of going for the missed dose. Do not use double dose to make up for the missed dose.
Precautions
Inform your doctor if you are allergic to Gentamicin. Any other prescription medications that you take should be informed to your doctor so that they will see that there are no drug interactions. Women who are breast feeding or planning to become pregnant should inform their doctor before using Gentamicin. If you are person who wears contact lenses then don't be in a hurry to wear it immediately after applying the medication. You need to wait for at least 15 minutes before using your contact lenses. Some of the side effects of using Gentamicin are burning sensation of the eye, irritation in the eye or a stinging sensation. Sometime swelling of the eye is also there.
