Glyburide (Glibenclamide)
Description
Glyburide is the generic drug name that is sold in brand names like Micronase, DiaBeta, Glynase PresTab and so on. This medication is used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes i.e, patients who are not dependent on insulin. Taking this medication controls the blood sugar levels. This medicine is available in strengths of 1.25 mg, 2.5 mg, and 5 mg. The 1.25 mg tablet is available in bottles of 50, while the 2.5 mg tablets are available in bottles of 100 and 500. The 5 mg tablet is available in bottles of 100, 500, and 1000.
Recommendations
Glyburide is recommended for people with type 2 diabetes. This medicine should be taken in conjunction with the regular exercise and diet. The usual recommended starting dosage of Glyburide is 2.5 mg to 5 mg daily. It is recommended to take this medication with breakfast. A dose of 1.25 mg is recommended for those who are sensitive to such drugs. The maintenance dosage is 1.25 mg to 20 mg daily depending upon the response of the patient. Dosages above 20 mg are not recommended per day.
Precautions
Patients taking other medications like blood thinners, disopyramide, fluoxetine, ACE inhibitors, antibiotics and cyclosporine should consult their doctor before taking Glyburide. Patients taking some of the medications like clonidine, beta-blockers might not know when they will have low-blood sugar. Hence it is recommended they consult their doctor before taking Glyburide. There are some drugs that might also raise the blood sugar level if you take Glyburide with them. Medicines like diuretics, steroids, thyroid medicine, and certain birth control pills will have this effect.
Some of the side effects of taking Glyburide might be nausea, headache, seizure, weakness, hallucinations, mild itching, blurred vision, and pale skin. If you experience any of these symptoms do contact your doctor immediately. Do consult your doctor for any other side effects that might occur if Glyburide is taken. It is better to reveal the medicines taken by you before taking Glyburide so that you can avoid any serious side effects.
