The preparation is produced from digitalis plant leaves with digoxin as an active ingredient. Lanoxin contributes to a strong heartbeat and its rhythm normalization. The drug is primarily designed to treat an array of heart failures.
Indications for use
The drug has a relatively narrow scope of action and prescribed in case of:
Chronic heart failure (congestive);
tachyarrhythmia (paroxysmal supraventricular) atrial fibrillation, paroxysmal tachycardia.
Lanoxin is a representative of a cardiac glycosides group. The formulation is made from woolly foxglove medicinal plants (digitalis lanata). The drug has an inotropic, vasodilator andmild diuretic action.
While increasing the stroke and stroke volume of the heart, it prolongs the refractory period and shortens the atrioventricular conduction as well as reduces the frequency of contractions of the heart muscle. In case of stagnation in cardiovascular disease it can be used due to its pronounced vasodilating effect. The medication has a mild diuretic effect, reduces the severity of edema and shortness of breath. Once administered, the drug gets quickly and almost completely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. The bioavailability of the product is 60-70%. 60 min after peroral administration the therapeutic concentration of the product is built in the blood. The cMax in plasma levels is achieved after 1.5 hours later administration. The half-life is defined by several factors (changes in renal function in aged patients are possible). In younger patients the half-life typically equals 36 hours, in the elderly - 68 hours approximately. Up to 80% of the product is excreted by the kidneys in an unchanged form.
Simultaneous food intake with Lanoxin the absorption is decreased, yet the extent of absorption is not altered. In the case of the prevalence of food fiber the absorption of digoxin is considerably reduced.
How should I take Lanoxin?
The dosage regimen is selected by the physician individually. A single dose prescribed for adults is 0,00025g, which is 1 tablet of 0.25 mg. On the first day of therapy the medication is consumed 4-5 times/day at equal intervals. The daily dose reaches 1-1.25 mg. The next day, a single dose remains unchanged, but it now is now 1-3 times/day. The positive effect is evaluated according to electrocardiography, respiratory functions and urination tests. Depending on the success of course digoxin dose may be enlargedor reduced. After the onset of the therapeutic effect the administration routine is the following: of 0,5-0,25-0,125 mg (2 pills in the morning 1 pill in the afternoon and 0.5 of a pill at night). For adults, the maximum daily dose is 1.5 mg In case of cardiovascular failure digoxin is prescribed at a 0.125-0.25 mg daily dose. At the beginning of therapy of arrhythmia higher dosages can be prescribed 0,375-0,5 mg/day. In sinus rhythm, digoxin is not used at high doses (0.25 mg day).
As for pediatric dose, individual selection is initiated.
