Levaquin is the brand name of the generic drug Levofloxacin. This drug comes under the category of antibiotics and is used in the treatment of bacterial infections in skin, bladder, prostate, sinuses, and kidneys. Pneumonia causing bacterial infections are also treated with Levaquin. People who are exposed to anthrax can also be treated with this drug. This drug is also available in brand names like Levofloxacin Leva-Pak.
Levaquin tablets can be taken with or without food. If you are taking oral solutions, it is better to take them one hour before meals or 2 hours after meals. Always use the measuring spoon or cup that comes with the product.
The dose of Levofloxacin would be 250 mg, 500 mg or 750 mg for every 24 hours depending on the condition for which it is used.
The effectiveness of Levaquin is reduced when it is taken with antacids, ulcer medicine sucralfate, chewable tablets and vitamin and mineral supplements.
Dose adjustments are needed for people with joint problems, seizures, diabetes, low pottassium in blood, myasthenia gravis and for those who are allergic to antibiotics.
People who are allergic to Levaquin and other antibiotics like norfloxacin, ofloxacin, ciprofloxacin, lomefloxacin, and moxifloxacin should not use Levaquin. Before 2 hours and after 2 hours of taking Levofloxacin, you should stop taking all vitamins and mineral supplements, since such supplements might reduce the effect of Levaquin. Your skin will be more sensitive when you are on Levaquin. So it is better to avoid direct sunlight and tanning beds when you take Levofloxacin. Elderly people when taking Levaquin might experience stiffness, swelling, tenderness in the joints. If they experience them, they have to contact their doctor immediately. Levaquin might pass on to the baby through breast milk, so you have to get the consent of you doctor before taking Levaquin if you are breast-feeding your baby.
