Levothroid, or Levothyroxine, is an effective and time-tested medication that is used as replacement of hormones produced by the thyroid gland. The medication is commonly prescribed for patients with thyroid disorders, and, as a result, low thyroid hormone. Additionally, the preparation balances the energy level and metabolic processes. Hypothyroidism is the main disorder that is commonly treated with Levothroid. Besides, the drug is recommended to prevent and treat enlarged thyroid gland that is provoked by radiation treatment, cancer, surgery or hormone imbalances, etc.
Before the beginning of Levothroid treatment course, it is essential to consult a healthcare provider. It will ensure high safety of the medicine intake and guarantee the greatest results. Follow the prescription without any changes. Do not increase or decrease the recommended dose to avoid possible side effects and abnormalities. Call your doctor if you feel that the prescribed dose is ineffective; though never adjust it on your own. Continue administering Levothyroxine even if the symptoms improve.
All the instructions and recommendations concerning the treatment intake are selected by the doctor individually, for each separate case and condition, though in general, Levothyroxine should be taken with a full glass of water. Frequent medical tests should be required during the medication usage.
If you have occasionally missed one Levothyroxine dose, take it the moment you remember about it, but skip it if the next scheduled one should be administered soon. However, never increase or double the prescribed dose.
Precautions and Contraindications
Apart from the strict following the instructions of the healthcare provider one should mind precautions and contraindications related to the drug intake. Inform your medical specialist about all the health problems you have, especially heart diseases, thyroid complications, coronary artery problem, diabetes, anemia, osteoporosis, pituitary gland issues, etc. Avoid the medicine intake if you are allergic to Levothyroxine active ingredients or other related medications. Even though the treatment is not supposed to harm an unborn or nursing child, do not take the pharmaceutical if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Inform your doctor about recent radiation therapy you’ve received, if any.
In addition to definite contraindications, Levothroid can interact with other drugs. Thus, provide your medical specialist about other treatments you are taking. Some prescription and non-prescription drugs may make the medicine less effective. Avoid the combination of Levothroid with the following drugs:
- calcium carbonate;
- ferrous sulfate iron supplement;
- sodium polystyrene sulfonate;
- cholestyramine, colestipol and others.
Your doctor will provide you with a full list of preparations you should avoid while administering Levothroid.
Even though the medication is approved to be completely safe and effective, it may cause several side effects. The most common reaction to the treatment course is mild hair loss. However, more serious complications include allergic reactions, fever, insomnia, uneven heartbeat, fatigue and others. Seek emergency medical assistance in case you have noticed any of the mentioned complications or their combinations. Call your doctor in case your mild reactions do not fade away and new symptoms appear.
