Lomefloxacin or generic Maxaquin is anti-infective quinolone with a wide spectrum of action. The drug is useful against respiratory infections in adults and children. This bacterial agent has active broad spectrum action against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria and enterobacteria.
In medical practice, the drug is indicated for the treatment of inflammatory lesions of the bronchi and lungs, skin, mucous membranes, bones and joints, muscular and urogenital systems, caused by gram-negative flora, including resistant to most commonly used antimicrobials.
Maxaquin studies have proved high efficacy in the treatment of mixed purulent infection. Uncomplicated gonorrhea can be cured completely with single-dose of the drug 400 mg. The drug is indicated for the treatment of intestinal dysbiosis, caused by Enterobacteriaceae, including pathogenic E. coli.
An important feature of this medical agent is its effectiveness in patients with lowered immunity or neutropenia.
How to apply Maxaquin, doses and schedule
Maxaquin is prescribed medication and can be used only after recommendation of your doctor. In this case, the dose is picked up individually, according to disease state and overall patientís health condition.
Usually, the medicine is administered orally, 1 tablet (400 mg) once daily. The duration of treatment depends on the type and severity of infection, the clinical effectiveness of the therapy. In most cases it is not more than 7-10 days. Lower urinary tract infections are treated within 3-5 days.
In severe cases, the dose can be doubled and assigned for a long-term treatment (2-3 months).
Maxaquin interaction with other drugs and contraindications
The remedy can interact with other drugs and sometimes even with certain food. If you need Maxaquin therapy, be careful with antacids, containing aluminum and magnesium, as Lomefloxacin delays absorption. Probenecid slows down the action of Lomefloxacin and the appointment with theophylline increases the risk of side effects.
Food does not affect the power of the drug, but reduces the rate of absorption of Maxaquin in the gastrointestinal tract.
Maxaquin contraindications are almost the same like in all other drugs: hypersensitivity to lomefloxacin and other fluoroquinolones, pregnancy and lactation, children under 16 years (the period of the formation and growth of the skeleton), epilepsy.
Are there Maxaquin side effect and how to avoid them?
Clinical practice rarely detects side effects of the drug. But, still, sometimes may appear dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, photosensitivity, allergic reactions. All manifestations of the side effects will immediately disappear after drug withdrawal.
In order to avoid Maxaquin side effects, you should follow simply rules and advice of your doctor and drug manufacturer. Thus, take into account that patients with impaired renal function are recommended to decrease the dose, depending on the creatinine clearance. If you treat with Maxaquin, donít take antacids for 4 hours before and 2 hours after ( with a chelating lomefloxacin and reduces its bioavailability). Patients with severe cerebral arteriosclerosis, epilepsy and other CNS diseases should take Maxaquin with caution. Donít forget that the pill belongs to the drugs, which are sold only according to prescription from the doctor, so make it clear in advance, before purchase. Or turn to online drug store, where Maxaquin is available without prescription
