Being an antiemetic drug, meclizine is designed to treat diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. The medication boasts noteworthy antihistaminic and anticholinergic properties. The scope and mechanism of action of the drug in case of dizziness is not fully understood. Since it is assumed that the area of action of other antihistamines is peripheral region of the body, it is believed the preparation provides the effect in this area as well.
Meclizine is an antiemetic, antihistamine and anti-allergic drug. It blocks H1-histamine receptors and reduces the vasodilator effect of histamine and spasmogenic. It is believed that the efficacy in dizziness, nausea and vomiting is achieved through interaction with peripheral labyrinth structures. After a single oral effect occurs within 1 hour and lasts up to 24 hours. The half-life of the drug equals approximately 6 hours
Meclizine: indications for use
The drug is mainly prescribed within the framework of monetherapy to prevent and and treat systematic nausea, vomiting and dizziness manifestations. In symptomatic therapy the remedy is intended to facilitate the patient's condition temporarily, rather than contribute to its complete regeneration. The drug may also be appointed to those suffering from air and sea sickness, motion sickness (as therapy and preventive measures). The preparation demonstrates considerable efficiency in labyrinth and vestibular disorders, including Meniere's disease.
For the treatment of nausea, vomiting and dizziness the medication is appointed to be taken pereorally intake in adults and children from twelve years. A single dose of drug prevents symptoms of nausea and motion sickness: the patients are recommended to take the necessary dose of pills prior to air or sea travel. The action of one dose is enough for the whole day free of unwanted manifestations. The medication is also very effective in the urge of nausea and vomiting in pregnant women. If the patient is suffering from vestibular labyrinth, the drug is prescribed at a daily dosage of 100mg maximum, regardless of its actions.
Adults and children over 12 years are appointed to administer a daily dose of 25-100 mg in divided doses, depending on the clinical effect for the prevention and symptomatic treatment of nausea, vomiting and dizziness. Single administration at a dose of 25 – 50mg prevents the appearance of symptoms of motion sickness for about 24 hours starting dose should be taken at least 1 hour prior to travel to ensure absorption of the drug. Later the drug can be taken repeatedly every 24 hours if there are indications throughout the trip. In any kind of treatment the dosage must not exceed 100mg on a daily basis.
Meclizine: side effects and contraindications
Even though the medication is characterized by good tolerability and can be purchased without a recipe, it may still cause side effects and may not suit a particular group of patients.
By the side effects of drugs include dry mouth and excessive sleepiness, sometimes vomiting or blurred vision. Irritability is noticed in children. Medication must not be administered if the patient has sensitivity to certain components of the drug. The use of the drug in patients with glaucoma or those with enlarged prostate must be avoided. Drivers and those whose job requires increased attention should take the medication cautiously.
