Mellaril - oral antipsychotic, from the group of piperidine phenothiazines. The remedy was synthesized in 50s. In the first years of the clinical use, Mellaril showed similar efficacy with chlorpromazine in the treatment of schizophrenia, at least for the treatment of positive symptoms.
Thioridazine is often regarded as the drug of choice for the treatment of elderly patients as less likely causes extrapyramidal side effects.
Due to its antipsychotic, anxiolytic, antidepressant, antipruritic, and alpha-adrenergic and m-anticholinergic action, the medicine is preferable in clinical practice allover the world. In small doses, Mellaril has an anxiolytic effect and reduces the feeling of tension and anxiety. In higher doses it has antipsychotic (neuroleptic) properties. If taken in medium therapeutic doses, does not cause drowsiness and extrapyramidal disorders. Has little antiemetic effect, moderate - hypotensive.
What are the indications for the drug use?
Schizophrenia, manic-depressive psychosis, neurosis, accompanied by fear, excitement, stress, compulsive and psychotic disorders, accompanied by hyperactivity and excitement, severe behavioral disorders, associated with psychotic disorders or neurological diseases, accompanied by aggression; inability to prolonged concentration; tics, withdrawal symptoms, psychomotor agitation of various origin, moderate and severe depression in adults, Huntington's disease, skin disease, occurring with a strong and painful itching, behavior disorder in children with increased psychomotor activity.

Mellaril scientific studies: the drug can kill cancer stem cells
A team of specialists found that Mellaril (the drug for the treatment of mental disorders) can kill cancer stem cells without producing toxic effect on healthy cells of the human body.
This gives a hope for invention of broad-spectrum anti-cancer drugs. For comparison: modern methods, like standard chemotherapy, work, "poisoning" all cells. As a result, patients have hair loss, nausea, anemia.
It is believed stem cells - the basis of many types of cancers. In 1997, Canadian experts were the first, who found these cells in leukemia. To date, these cancer cells are found in blood, breast, brain, lung, gastrointestinal tract, prostate and ovarian cancers.
The head of the Institute of Stem Cell Research and Cancer Mick Bhatia said: "Mellaril kills cancer in an unusual way. It changes stem cells, transforming them into non-hazardous. Normal cells are not affected. In the near future, we are planing to make clinical trials of medications for persons with relapsed acute myeloid Leukemia".
During the study of Mellaril it has also been found that a drug works via the dopamine receptor, residing on the surface of cancer cells in leukemia and breast cancer. Hence, in theory, the medicine Mellaril can be used as a marker for helping to diagnose cancer at an early stage.
