Minipress is the brand name for the generic drug prazosin hydrochloride. This drug is categorized as alpha adrenergic blockers whose primary function is to relax the arteries and the veins thereby enabling the smooth flow of blood in them. This drug is used in the treatment of high blood pressure. This drug can also be used with other diuretics. Minipress is available in strengths of 1 mg, 2 mg, and 5 mg and is available in packs of 250's.
There is no fixed dosage for all the patients who have high blood pressure. The dosage differs from patient to patient depending on their response to the medication. An initial dose of 1 mg for two or three times a day is recommended. The dosage can be increased to up to 20 mg per day depending on the response of the patient. Dosages higher than 20 mg might not be effective on the patient. If other medications for hypertension are used the dosage of Minipress might be reduced.
Serious side effects like diarrhea, constipation, edema, dyspnea, vertigo, nervousness, rashes, blurred vision, frequent urination, dry mouth, nasal congestion and hypotension might occur in some patients. If you experience any of these conditions do contact your doctor immediately for adjustment in the dosage of Minipress. Since the response of the patient varies, monitoring the condition of the patient is necessary for change in dosage. The main ingredient in Minipress, the prazosin hydrochloride, might affect the pupils of the eye during a cataract surgery. If you plan to have an eye surgery, do inform your surgeon about this medication that you take. If you happen to take any other medications also you have to inform the doctor before taking Minipress. If you are allergic to Flomax, Terzosin, Silodosin, Doxazosin and Uroxatral, do not take Minipress. It is always better to inform you doctor if you are pregnant or planning to get pregnant before you take Minipress.
