Misoprostol is the generic drug that is sold in the brand name Cytotec. This drug is used to reduce the risk of ulcers in patients who take NSAIDs. This is done by reducing the production of acid in the stomach. The tablets are available in strengths of 100 mcg and 200 mcg. The 100 mcg is available in bottles of 60, 120 and a carton of 100 unit dose. The 200 mcg tablet is available in bottles of 60, 100 and a carton of 100 unit dose.
The recommended dosage for adults is 200 mcg every 6 hours. If the patient cannot tolerate this dose it can be reduced to 100 mcg. Misoprostol should be taken along with food. If you are taking antacid with magnesium then it is better to take it one hour before taking this medicine or two hours after taking this medicine. This medicine is given only on the second or third day after the normal menstrual period for women. This is to ensure that they are not pregnant.
Pregnant women should not take Misoprostol as it might induce abortion in them. It might also cause uterine rupture that induces abortion. Patients who are allergic to the constituents of Misoprostol should avoid taking this medicine. If you are planning to become pregnant do inform your doctor about that idea so that you are not prescribed Misoprostol. Any prescription and non-prescription medicines that you take should be intimated to your doctor before you start taking Misoprostol. Any ailments that you suffer should be informed to your doctor. Consult your doctor on the drug interactions if Misoprostol with other drugs you take.
Some of the side effects of Misoprostol are drowsiness, blurred vision, dizziness, diarrhea, nausea, stomach pain, cramps, fever, headache, irregular heartbeat, severe vomiting, fatigue, anxiety, and depression. Do consult your doctor for other side effects that might occur. If you experience any abnormal condition do contact your doctor immediately.
