Motrin (Ibuprofen)
Description
Motrin the brand name of a drug contains Ibuprofen as the active ingredient. This drug is slightly soluble in water and is sold in strengths of 400 mg, 600 mg, and 800 mg in the form of tablets. This drug is taken orally and is used in the treatment of inflammations. This drug is non-steroidal. These tablets are called NSAID which means non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. The inactive ingredients in Motrin include colloidal silicon dioxide, lactose, titanium dioxide, croscarmellose sodium, carnauba wax, magnesium stearate, propylene glycol and microcrystalline cellulose.
Recommendations
Motrin is used in the treatment of mild to moderate pain and in the treatment of dysmenorrhea. This drug can also be used for treating the symptoms of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. It is not advisable to use this drug on children as it is still not tested on children. Use this drug for the shortest duration possible and with the lowest dosage. The dosage can be adjusted according to the patients’ condition. The benefits and the risks are weighted and then taken in case of Motrin. The maximum dosage per day for Motrin is 3200 mg. Motrin can be taken with your food or milk to avoid any gastrointestinal problems. Depending on the response of the patient to this drug and the symptoms present the dosage can be increased or decreased. The dosage required by rheumatoid patients would be higher than that of the osteoarthritis patients’. The condition of the patient is reviewed after two weeks of starting the treatment the dosage of Motrin can be adjusted accordingly. For mild to moderate pain the 400 mg tablet would suffice. In case of dysmenorrhea 400 mg tablet should be given for every 4 hours.
Precautions
Motrin should not be used on patients who are suffering from any type of heart ailments. Gastrointestinal events like perforation of stomach, bleeding, ulceration might occur and these could be even fatal in some cases. You may not know these until it gets serious. Elderly patients should not take this drug without prescription. If the patients already have hypertension then it is not advisable to have Motrin. Motrin might make the hypertension worse. If people with hypertension take Motrin cardiovascular events might be triggered. Pregnant women should avoid Motrin. Renal functions might be affected and skin reactions might be triggered in some patients using Motrin.
