Namenda (Memantine HCL)
The active ingredient of the medicine with brand name Namenda is memantine hydrochloride. This medicine is available in the form of tablets and oral solutions. It is used in the treatment of disorder of the brain in the Alzheimer disease. This medicine is available in the 5 mg and 10 mg doses. Each bottle of this medication has 60 tablets. 10 x 10 Unit dose is also available. The oral solution of this medicine is available in 360 mL bottles with strength of 2 mg per mL.
The dosage of Namenda that is recommended for treating disorder of the brain is 20 mg per day. This is the effective dosage for most of the patients. The starting dosage of Namenda is 5 mg per day and then it is increased in increments of 5 mg to 10 mg / day, 15 mg/ day and 20 mg / day. The increment in the dosage should be done only after a week of taking the medication at each increment stage. You can take Namenda with food or without food. Read the instructions given in the product before you use the oral solution of Namenda. The dosage recommendations for bot the tablets and the oral solutions are the same.
Side effects like coughing, confusion, hallucination, back pain, vomiting, constipation, dizziness, headache, and hypertension are found in some patients who take Namenda. Apart from the above pneumonia and rashes are also found in some patients. Patients who suffer from seizures should be monitored closely when they take this medication. If the patient is having severe renal impairment then the dosage of Namenda should be reduced for such patients. However in patients with moderate to mild renal impairment the regular doses of Namenda can be given. The effect of this medication in pregnant women and nursing mothers is not studied.
Overdose of Namenda might result in loss of consciousness, restlessness, visual hallucinations, vomiting, weakness, slow movements, somnolence, and agitation.
