Nolvadex (Tamoxifen Citrate)
Description
Nolvadex is the brand name for the generic drug tamoxifen citrate. It is available in the form of tablets in strengths of 10 mg and 20 mg. It is also available in the form of solution. This drug is used in the treatment of breast cancer and also for other types of cancer. This drug is an antiestrogen. In that sense it blocks the effects of the estrogen hormone in our body.
Recommendations
Nolvadex is used to reduce the risk of breast cancer in women who have the chances of developing breast cancer. Apart from breast cancer it is also used in treating cancer in the lining of the uterus and skin cancer.
For treating breast cancer a dosage of 20 to 40 mg daily is recommended. For reducing the risk of breast cancer in high risk women, 20 mg per day is recommended. This should be continued for 5 years. In case of treatment for ductal carcinoma the recommended dosage is 20 mg per day for 5 years.
Precautions
The risks and the benefit of using Nolvadex are weighed before it is prescribed to the patient. If you are allergic to tamoxifen then you should not use it. It is not sure whether this medication will work the same way in both young adults and older people. The fetus might be affected if Nolvadex is used in pregnant women. The risks involved in using this medication while breast feeding is not known. It is not advisable to use Nolvadex with Warfarin. If you are taking medications like Dicumarol, Fluoxetine, Genistein, Ipriflavone, Acenocomarol and so on then there is a need to adjust the dosage of Nolvadex. If you already have problems like blood clots, pulmonary embolism, uterine cancer, stroke, blood problems, cataracts, and high cholesterol then Nolvadex might have a drastic effect. It is necessary that you reveal these problems to your doctor.
