Pamelor is the brand name of the generic drug Nortriptyline hydrochloride. This drug comes under the category of tricyclic antidepressants which have an effects on the chemicals found in the brain. Patients suffering from depression are prescribed with this medication and it is also used for other purposes. This drug is available as capsules and oral solution. Strengths of 10 mg, 25 mg, 50 mg, and 75 mg are available in capsules. The oral solution has a strength of 10 mg per 5 mL.
How to use
The recommended adult dosage of Pamelor is 25 mg, three to four times a day. The patient should not consider taking more than 150 mg per day. If the patient is taking more than 100 mg in a day, their condition should be closely monitored. For younger patients the recommended dosage is a maximum of 50 mg per day which can be divided in to appropriate dosages in a day.
Suicidal thinking in the patients using this drug is one of the side effects that are found. Hence it is necessary that proper prescription be used for taking this drug. This drug should be taken with proper medical observation and supervision. Do consult your physician if you find any worsening of behavior. Patients who had a heart attack should not use Pamelor. Patients taking MAO inhibitors like Parnate, Eldepryl, Nardil, Azilect, and Marplan should not consider taking Pamelor within the 2 weeks of taking these medications. You might have trouble sleeping, anxiety, and behavioral changes while you are on Pamelor.
Mothers who are breast feeding their child should consult their doctor before taking this medication. Tell your physician if you are planning to have a baby or if you are pregnant while taking this medication. Patients below the age of 18 years should not take this medication without the consent of a doctor. If you are allergic to nortriptyline you should not take Pamelor. Do inform your doctor if you have glaucoma, urinary problems, thyroid disorders, diabetes, schizophrenia or any bipolar disorder. If you have any of these problems the dosage of Pamelor might be adjusted and special tests might be recommended to you.
