Petcam Oral Suspension was first manufactured in the UK and Germany in 1993, and within as little as the first two years of production it has been successfully applied to over 43,000 dogs. Today, available in many countries, this product has become a real commercial and therapeutic success.
Indications for use
The active ingredient of the drug is meloxicam, NSAIDs group representative. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are oftentimes taken advantage of in surgery, dentistry, gynecology, and widely used in the musculoskeletal system acute and chronic diseases treatment, accompanied by severe pain and inflammation (inflammation of the joints and the joint capsule, the deformation of the joints, inflammation of the structural elements of the spine pathology disks, etc.).
Inflammation is a complex chain of biochemical reactions that occurs in response to the damage of a particular tissue or organ. The purpose of the inflammatory response the localization of the damage, the destruction of its causes and recovery or healing of damaged structures. A significant role in the development of inflammation belongs to prostaglandins (PG). PGs irritate nociceptors and are involved in the development of edema.
Despite the fact that the body's inflammatory response has a protective nature, in many diseases prolonged inflammatory processes drain and depletes the resources of the body (for example, chronic diseases of the musculoskeletal system), making its function restoration hardly possible. In such cases, NSAID therapy becomes the first choice option. NSAIDs inhibit the activity of cyclooxygenase (COX), thereby influence the synthesis of PG (simply put, reduce prostaglandins synthesis) and thus interrupt the inflammatory response. The suppression of COX is the core mechanism of anti-inflammatory and analgesic actions NSAIDs provide.
Petcam Oral Suspension selectively acts on COX-2, giving a strong anti-inflammatory and analgesic effect. With prolonged use of the negative effects were observed not more than 1.5% of the dogs. While efficacy exceeded 90%.
The active ingredient penetrates well into the synovial fluid, and unlike most NSAIDs it doesn’t have a devastating effect on the articular cartilage, which makes it a drug ¹1 in the treatment of chronic diseases of the musculoskeletal system.
The use of any NSAID preparation is contraindicated in female dogs during lactation, puppies, animals with cardiovascular diseases, kidney and liver diseases, as well as in cases with the threat of the development of ulcerative lesions of the gastrointestinal tract and gastrointestinal bleeding (all of the above restrictions apply to Petcam). Animals younger than 6 months should be prescribed the drug with caution, individual approaches and dosage should be applied. A prolonged use of Metacam should be initiated under the supervision of a veterinarian only.
Dosage and administration
Petcam oral suspension is suitable for home use. Each bottle is provided with a preparation syringe on which dog's weight marks are engraved, which facilitates and simplifies dosing calculations. The suspension may be given as a mixture with feed, or separately before feeding, squeezing the contents of the syringe directly to the root of the tongue of a dog. The product has a pleasant taste and it is well accepted by dogs. The bottles typically contain 10, 32 and 100 ml of preparation, which makes it possible to choose the most convenient volume (for example, for a dog weighing 20 kg, at an application rate of 0.1 mg per 1 kg of body weight daily, 32 ml is sufficient for 24 days). We should not forget that in the first day of treatment, to enhance the effect, you must use an injection.
