Phenergan (Promethazine)
Description
Phenergan is the brand name for the generic drug promethazine HCl. It is also sold in brand name Pentazine. Being an antihistamine, this drug is used in resisting the effects of histamine that occurs naturally in your body. Thus this medication is used in the treatment of symptoms of allergies. Symptoms like skin rashes, itchiness, watery eyes, runny nose, and sneezing are treated with Phenergan. This medication is available in the form of tablets and suppositories. Phenergan tablets of strengths 12.5 mg, 25 mg, and 50 mg are available in bottles of 100 tablets.
Recommendations
The recommended dosage for the treatment of allergy is a maximum of 25 mg per day which can be split to doses of 2 or 4. If split to 2 doses, you can take 12.5 mg per dose and can be taken before meals. If the dosage is split to 4, then you can take 6.5 mg per dose. It is always recommended that the smallest possible dosage is given to both the adults and the children for relieving the symptoms of allergies. Phenergan can also be used in the treatment of motion sickness, nausea and vomiting. Keep the tablets away from light and at room temperatures of 20 to 25 deg C.
Precautions
In some patients taking Phenergan might lead to uncontrollable movements of the eyes, tongue, lips, and arms. If you see such symptoms call your doctor immediately. This medication should not be given to children below 2 years of age. Phenergan might affect your thinking and hence it is advised not to drive after taking Phenergan. Do not involve in any tasks that demands your attention and alertness. If you are already taking any other medicines for treating any other ailments, do inform your doctor about those medicines. Phenergan might interact with other drugs and cause other side effects. Dosage adjustments might be needed for patients who are already taking medicines for glaucoma, prostate problems, liver or kidney disease, heart ailments, sleep apnea and digestive problems. Inform your doctor if you have any of these problems.
