More than 20 types of human papillomavirus (HPV) can infect the genital tract. Most HPV infections are asymptomatic, occur in subclinical or unrecognized.
Most people with HPV do not need treatment, because the immune system will get rid of the virus. Only a small number of women require treatment of neoplasms arise, ranging from warts to cancer of the cervix.
When choosing a method of treatment of genital warts should proceed from the patient's preference, the available resources and paramedic expertise. None of the currently available drugs do not have a higher efficiency than Podofilox.
External genital warts - treatment with Podofilox
Podofilox - a drug, that is used in the treatment of manifestations of human papillomavirus infection - warts, molluscum contagiosum, genital warts. The drug is also used for the treatment of basal cell carcinoma. The medication provides a stimulating and normalizing effect on the immune system, thus contributing to the production of interferon.
Also, Podofilox drug actively stimulates the regeneration of the skin, improving its appearance with actinic (senile) keratosis. With immunomodulatory effect, Podofilox stimulates the production processes and synthesize interferon.
Podofilox is presented in a form of 0.5% solution or 0.15% gel. Patients may apply Podofilox solution at home without prescription and medical control. Just take a cotton swab or apply the remedy in a form of gel with a help of fingers 2 times a day for 3 days followed by a pause for 4 days. This cycle can be repeated, if necessary, make four cycles. The total area of the treated warts should not exceed 10 cm2, and the total volume of Podofilox should be no more than 0.5 ml per day. If possible, the medical practitioner should spend the first treatment to show how to apply the drug and what warts should be cured. The safety application of this drug during pregnancy has not been proved.
Studies have shown that the warts on the penis need a higher concentration of the drug, and for warts on female genitals and anus it is required the lower concentration. It is well known that Podofilox removes warts in 29 - 90% of patients within four - six weeks of the drug use. But after treatment, the warts can appear again. Thus, try to live healthy lifestyle to avoid their further appearance.
Clinical studies of Podofilox
Clinical studies of the remedy show that its use allows reducing of the size of tumors or complete regression in about 80% of patients with warts, 8 - 10% showed significant improvement. The drug is also active in the treatment of basal cell carcinoma and has positive therapeutic effect in about 75 out of 100 cases, with no skin left scarring (such as after surgery). The duration of Podofilox treatment therapy depends on the severity of the disease, usually it takes 12 - 16 weeks. This medicine has the ability to stimulate the human immune system - it causes increased production of interferon in the body.
Podofilox gel is required to apply a thin layer to the affected skin three times a week at night, and then in the morning. Before application wash affected skin with warm soapy water.
Indications and contraindications for use
Podofilox is shown for the treatment of genital warts, basal cell carcinoma, actinic keratosis (benign growths in the form of plaques, which are covered with hard scales), molluscum contagiosum (a viral disease of the skin, communicable -by household), papillomas, different types of warts, genital warts. Reviews of the drug show that this tool is also effective in the treatment of actinic keratosis.
Application of Podofilox is contraindicated in children under 12 years of age, pregnant women, breastfeeding, those with existing allergic reactions to the use of this drug.
Podofilox immunostimulatory drug therapy may be accompanied by the appearance of adverse reactions: skin irritation, redness, flaking of the skin, swelling, rash. Also may cause feelings of itching and burning of the skin, headaches, muscle pain.
