Ponstel is the brand name for the generic drug mefenamic acid. This drug comes under the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs category and the fenamate group. Like other NSAIDs Ponstel is also used for treating pain and is used in patients who are more than 14 years of age. It is also used in the treatment of menstrual cramps and in treating pains due to osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Ponstel is available in strengths of 250 mg and in bottles of 100. It is better to store them at temperatures between 20 to 25 deg C.
For adults, to relieve pain, the recommended initial dosage is 500 mg and then onwards a dosage of 250 mg is recommended. The dosages can be given for every 6 hours. The patient should not use this medication for more than 7 days. The same dosage is recommended for treating menstrual cramps and the dose should be started with the onset of bleeding. In treating menstrual cramps the medication can be taken for up to 3 days.
Side effects reported on using Ponstel in some patients are constipation, heartburns, nausea, vomiting, itching, rashes, dizziness, stomach pain, abdominal pain, diarrhea, bleeding and perforations. In some cases serious side effects like congestive heart failure, hypertension, peptic ulcers, gastrointestinal bleeding and jaundice are reported. Patients who are suffering from kidney disorders should not use Ponstel. Since some of the side effects are very serious, it is recommended that you consult your doctor before taking this medication. Always take as prescribed by your doctor. Do reveal to your doctor if you are taking any other medication for treating some other conditions so that you can avoid drug interactions.
It is not advisable to take Ponstel during the later stage of pregnancy. If you are pregnant do consult your doctor if you need to take this medication. In some patients taking Ponstel anemia is seen. Do check your hemoglobin level if there is any symptoms of anemia and follow the instructions by your doctor. Breast feeding mothers should know that the drug will be passed on to the babies. Hence consult your doctor on taking this medication if you are feeding your baby.
