Premarin are conjugated estrogen tablets that are used primarily in the treatment of symptoms that occur due to menopause in women. This drug is also used in the treatment of breast cancer in some women. Post menopausal osteoporosis is also treated with Premarin in some women. This drug is used in such cases where non-estrogen treatment is not possible. The main ingredient is got from natural resources which contain a mixture of sodium equilin sulfate and sodium estrone sulfate. Premarin is available in strengths of 0.3 mg, 0.45 mg, 0.625 mg, 0.9 mg, and 1.25 mg in the form of tablets. Different colors are used for different strengths of the tablets. All of these strengths of Premarin are available in bottles of 100 tablets.
Premarin should be given to the patients at the minimal and the progress of the patient should be evaluated while treating for vaginal atrophy and vulvar atrophy which is caused due to menopause. The lowest effective dose is given to the patient. Treatment should be started with 0.3 mg of Premarin and if necessary the dosage can be increased based on the response of the patient. Cyclic regimens can also be followed for the patients. For example they can be given medication for 25 days and then a break of 5 days is given before the next cycle is started. In the case of the treatment for postmenopausal osteoporosis too the treatment is started with a dose of 0.3 mg with cyclic regimens. Premarin is also used in the treatment of hypoestrogenism. In such cases the dosage could be 0.3 mg or 0.625 mg on cyclic basis. Premarin is also used in the treatment of delayed puberty in which treatment should start with 0.15 mg. this dosage can be revised upwards after evaluating after an interval of 6 to 12 months. For treating primary ovarian failure the dosage could be 1.25 mg upwards daily or cyclical. A dose of 10 mg for three times daily is used in the treatment of breast cancer in women.
The patient has to be diagnosed properly before using Premarin for treatment. Patients who are already having some cardiovascular disorders and dementia should not be treated with Premarin. While treating with Premarin there is a risk of cardiovascular disorders and breast cancer. Hence the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration is used.
