Prilosec works as a proton pump inhibitor that helps in decreasing the amount of acid that our stomach produces.
Basically, Prilosec is used for treating ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (heartburn or GERD) and other types of conditions that involve excessive production of acid by the stomach like sysmetic mastocytosis, multiple endocrine adenomas and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
This medicine can be combined with antibiotics for treating certain kinds of ulcers that are caused due to bacterial infection (H. pylori).
It can also be used to prevent or treat the damage done to stomach and the upper part of the intestine due to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
Prilosec is successful in shutting down several acid producing active pumps directly over a period of time, while leaving enough acid that is necessary for digestion. By taking only one pill once in a day, you can relieve your heartburn for up to 24 hours at a stretch.
How to use
The directions for usage mentioned on the package label or prescription label should be followed carefully and if you do not clearly understand anything on it, it is better to consult a professional pharmacist or doctor. Prilosec should be taken exactly as prescribed.
Prilosec is available in the form of capsules and needs to be taken before meals. The Prilosec delayed-release capsules, regular capsules and non-prescription delayed-release tablets have to be swallowed whole, without crushing, chewing, opening or splitting them. The non-prescription delayed-release tablets should not be crushed and mixed into food or the regular capsules should not be opened and mixed into food.
Prilosec may be prescribed by your doctor for 10-14 days for eliminating H. pylori or for at least 4-8 weeks for treating other types of conditions. You should continue taking Prilosec even if you are feeling well. You should not stop taking it without consulting your doctor.
If you have missed a dose of Prilosec, you can take it whenever you remember it. But if the time for the next dose has arrived, you can skip the missed dose and continue taking your regular dose as per the schedule. Taking double dose at a time is not advised.
This medicine has to be stored at normal room temperature and should be kept away from excess heat, light and moisture.
