Procardia is referred antiischemic medications class. The drug affects the flow of calcium that enters vascular smooth muscle cells and cardiomyocytes, its use contributes to a decrease in blood pressure, expansion of the peripheral and coronary arteries, reduction of the total peripheral vascular resistance, myocardial contractility and improves coronary blood supply. According to clinical trials, Procardia doesn’t affect the conductivity of the myocardium and neither provides antiarrhythmic activity.
The action of nifedipine, the main ingredient, depends on how the concentration varies in the blood and on the speed of its increase and decrease. Conventional pills action is characterized by a sharp reduction in blood pressure. In response to this is, a reflex release of adrenaline and other ‘stimulating’ hormones is initiated.
Applied Nifedipine Nifedipine by indications: coronary heart disease with stenokardicheskie attack, hypertension, including kidney. Nifedipine is combined with verapamil can be used in nephrogenic hypertension drugs slow the progression of kidney failure. Also, the drug is included in the complex therapy of chronic cardiac insufficiency. In combination with bronchodilators drugs, Procardia may be used for instruction in asthma for maintenance treatment. The preparation has received positive reviews in Raynaud's disease treatment the preparation had a positive effect on cerebral hemodynamics.
Instructions for use
Procardia is designed for perioral use at a dose of 0,01-0,01gr, 3-4 times per day (up to 120mg day the maximum dosage). The treatment lasts for 1 2 months and more. In case of hypertensive crisis or angina attacks the preparation is taken sublingually, 10 mg pill is placed under the tongue and resolved within a few minutes. To speed up the onset of the therapeutic effect, the pill can moved to the core, but it must not be swallowed and left under the tongue to dissolve. In this case the patient should remain in a supineposition for half an hour. After 20-30min after the administration is repeated, with the dosage increased by 20-30mg. After the attack is dealt with, the administration regime is switched to perioral use. Procardia pills are effectively used in long-term treatment. Assign them to take 1-2 times per day at a dose of 20 mg, sometimes twice a day at a 40mg dose. The pills are taken after a meal without chewing.
Procardia can cause mostly mild and moderate side effects with the most common of them: flushing of the skin, tachycardia, hypotension, peripheral edema, bradycardia, nausea, diarrhea, and other. A prolonged use of the drug may trigger renal impairment, so the long administration requires professional observation. The annotation also states that the application 1 after the introduction a hypotension and increased heart rate can be caused. These symptoms pass away gradually over 5-15 minutes.
The medication is contraindicated for use in those suffering from hypotension, severe heart failure, cardiogenic shock, severe aortic stenosis or hypersensitivity. Women during lactation and pregnancy periods must refrain from treatment, as clinical trials revealed teratogenic and embryotoxic properties. But in gynecological practice Procardia is sometimes prescribed during pregnancy to reduce the pressure when other means (for example, St.John’s wort) show poor or absence efficacy. It is also noted that the drug allows to reduce the tone of the uterus during pregnancy, although this indication has not yet received the widespread use.
