Tavist is used for relief of symptoms caused by allergies and hay fever, such as pruritus, rhinitis, rhinorrhea, sneezing, or watery eyes. Tavist has no effect on pathogenesis; though the medication must not be used for the treatment of colds.
Tavist is a synthetic antihistamines remedy that has no effect on the central and peripheral nervous system. The drug blocks the histamine exogenous origin, but what is particularly important, it blocks histamine endogenous origin. The drug is characterized by an extremely fast and long lasting action. the preparation acts as an antagonist of histamine twice stronger than chlorphenamine and about 240 times stronger than telandin, in some cases therapeutic doses exhibit a mild soothing effect.
Tavist: indications for use
The medication demonstrates impressive efficiency in treating allergic rhinitis, pruritus, atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, urticaria, acute and chronic eczema, insect bites; the drug is also used as an adjunct to angioedema, anaphylactic shock or anaphylactoid reactions.
After ingestion Travist is absorbed in the digestive tract almost completely. Maximum plasma concentration is achieved within 2-4 hours, while antihistamine effect develops in 15-30 minutes. The maximum effect is achieved after 5-7 hours and lasts for 10-12 hours, sometimes up to 24 hours the medication is binding to plasma proteins is approximately 95%. The removal from plasma is biphasic, the terminal phase of half-life equals 4-6 hours; the drug is metabolized in the liver. The main way of excretion of metabolites is the urine.
Before you pick up a Tavist course, consult your treating doctor and indicate all the medications you take, including aspirin, herbs, vitamins and other remedies (with no regard to their natural or synthetic origin). Notify your doctor if you suffer from allergies, asthma, difficulty urinating, glaucoma, prostatic hypertrophy or cardiac arrhythmias.
The tablets are recommended to be swallowed entirely, though you may split them into two pieces to facilitate swallowing. Take the pills with food, water or milk to prevent stomach irritation. If Tavist causes drowsiness, schedule the intakes before bedtime. If you missed the reception, take the drug as soon as you remember about it, but avoid doubling the dosage.
Do not increase the dosage than those prescribed: overdose may increase the risk of adverse reactions significantly. Until you find out how you react to this medication refrain from driving and do not engage in other activities that require proper attention.
Taviast must not be prescribed to those suffering from diseases of the lower respiratory tract (including asthma), children under 1 year, women during lactation and pregnancy periods. The treatment must not be accompanied by the simultaneous use of MAO inhibitors, hypersensitivity to Tavist or other antihistamines of similar chemical structure.
Application of Tavist during pregnancy and breastfeeding is allowed only in emergency cases. The preparation should not be used during lactation, as the medication can be excreted in breast milk in small amounts. The use in children under the age of 12 years is allowed in emergency cases. Tavist should be used with caution in children under 6 years.
The medication must be used with caution in case of angle-closure glaucoma, asthma, pyloric stenosis, obstruction of the bile duct, liver disease, prostatic hypertrophy with impaired urodynamics, severe diseases of the cardiovascular system.
Tavist application may be accompanied by dry eyes, the fact that should be considered when wearing contact lenses. During Tavist treatment a patient must abstain from alcohol; during the pregnancy and lactation periods the medication is prescribed in emergency cases. During treatment should observe caution when driving vehicles or performing other activities that require attention and speed of mental and motor responses.
