Ventolin (Albuterol)
Description
Albuterol or Ventolin is the medicine which is used to treat or prevent any breathing problem in patients suffering from asthma or other airway diseases. It can be used in other conditions and even during breathing problems caused by exercise.
Ventolin is sympathomimetic bronchodilator. It relaxes the smooth muscles and allows easy flow of air in and out of lungs.
This medicine is used to prevent the obstruction of airway in patients who are suffering from asthma and in ones who suffer from asthma during exercise. Ventolin can also be used to treat patients with chronic bronchitis and emphysema in case the symptoms are some what related to airway obstruction. Once the form of albuterol is inflated, it starts working in 15 min and can last up to 6 hours.
Recommendations
It is advised to check the canister placing before using Ventolin. It should be well placed in the inhaler unit. Shake it well before using and check that there are no foreign particles on or near the mouthpiece. Completely breathe out and place the mouthpiece in between your lips and rest your tongue on it. Also consult your doctor whether to keep the inhaler 1-2 inches away or take help of any other special spacing device.
Precautions
Before starting take a slow deep breath and press both mouthpiece and canister at same time to release the Ventolin aerosol dose. Keep breathing slowly and hold it for the time you are comfortable doing. (Max 10 seconds). Then slowly breathe out from nose or pursed lips. In case you need more than 1 inhalation, wait for 1 min and the repeat the above steps.
As a precautionary measure, it is advised to keep this spray away from your eyes.
