Vytorin (Ezetimibe,Simvastatin)
Description
Vytorin is the brand name of the generic drug ezetimibe and simvastatin. This drug is used to control the level of cholesterol absorbed in our body. The ingredient ezetimibe is responsible for this action. On taking Vytorin the amount of bad cholesterol in our body (LDL) is reduced and the good cholesterol (HDL) is increased. Vytorin is available in strengths of 10/10, 10/20, 10/40, and 10/80. They are available in bottles of 30, 90, 1000 and 10000 and in unit dose packages of 100.
Recommendations
The drug Vytorin is recommended for person above the age of 10. Apart from using this for cholesterol control it is also used for other purposes the details of which can be obtained from your physician. It is also essential that you also control your cholesterol intake through proper diet. Then only this drug will have its effect. The dosage of Vytorin needs to be adjusted if you have liver disease, kidney disease, thyroid disorder, and diabetes. In patients who want to reduce the bad cholesterol to a greater extent the initial recommended dosage is 10/40 mg per day. After about 2 weeks the lipid levels are tested and the dosage of Vytorin is adjusted if needed.
Precautions
People who are allergic to ezetimibe or simvastatin should not take Vytorin. Pregnant women should not take Vytorin and they should inform their doctor about that. If you are having any liver disease also you should not take Vytorin. In some patients this medication will cause the breakdown of the muscle tissue and that might also lead to kidney failure. If you experience muscle pain, fatigue, fever, and dark color urine you must report that condition to your doctor immediately. Interaction of Vytorin with certain other drugs is possible. Patients who are taking drugs like amiodarone, danazol, medications for heart ailments and blood pressure, HIV medications, steroids, and cancer medications should consult their doctor for possible drug interactions before taking Vytorin.
