Xalatan is the brand name for the generic drug Latanoprost ophthalmic. It is an ophthalmic solution whose pH is 6.7 and each mL of Xalatan contains about 50 micrograms of Latanoprost. One drop of Xalatan contains approximately 1.5 microgram of Latanoprost. Xalatan is used to treat patients with high intraocular pressure. This ophthalmic solution reduces the intraocular pressure. Xalatan is available as 2.5 mL solution in 5 mL bottles with a dropper tip.
One drop of Xalatan on the affected eye daily is recommended. It is better to use this medication in the evening. If you happen to miss any dose do continue with the next dose. The intraocular pressure is reduced after about 3 to 4 hours and you will find good results after 8 to 12 hours. If you are using any other ophthalmic drug to reduced intraocular pressure use them five minutes apart. But consult your doctor if you are using other products too for the same condition.
If you are wearing contact lenses do not use Xalatan. The ingredients in Xalatan might affect the soft contact lenses. If you happen to use Xalatan, wear your contact lenses after at least 15 minutes of using Xalatan. The eye in which treatment is being done by Xalatan might change its color. Eyelids and lashes might also change its color and it might be a permanent change. If you are allergic to any other drugs do inform that to your doctor. If you have infection or swellings in the eyes inform that too to your doctor. If you are pregnant or planning to get pregnant it is necessary that you inform your doctor before using Xalatan. Use the prescribed dose of Xalatan. Using more than the prescribe dose might not have any effect.
Serious side effects like redness around the eye, itching, pain in the eye, discharge from the eye, sensitivity to light, chest pain, and vision changes might occur. If you happen to experience any of these side effects do contact your doctor immediately. Other side effects like headache, blurred vision, watery eyes, burning sensation in the eyes, and cold symptoms might also occur when you use Xalatan.
