Zyprexa is the brand name for the generic drug olanzapine. It is used for psychotic treatments. Manic depressions and schizophrenia are treated with the use of Zyprexa. It is used for treatments in patients are more than 13 years of age. Although there are other medications that act as antipsychotic, Zyprexa is used when none of the other medications work. Zyprexa is combined with fluoxetine to treat depressions in some patients.
Zyprexa is available in strengths of 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 7.5 mg, 10 mg, 15 mg, and 20 mg. It is also available as an intra-muscular injection of 10 mg strength in one vial.
In the treatment of Schizophrenia in adults the initial dosage that is recommended is 5 to 10 mg per day as single dose. This dose can be taken anytime in the day with or without food. The dosage can be increase to up to 15 mg per day depending upon the response of the patient to this medication. In adolescents it is recommended to start with other medications before coming to Zyprexa. In adolescents the recommended dosage is 2.5 to 5 mg per day. The dosage can be increased up to 10 mg depending upon the response of the patient.
For treating bipolar disorders in adults the dosage can be started with 10 or 15 mg per day and can be increased in increments of 5 mg depending on the response of the patient. In adolescents the dosages should be 2.5 to 5 mg in treating bipolar disorders and the dosage can be increased to up to 10 mg per day.
Combine Zyprexa with Fluoxetine to treat resistant depression.
Do not use Zyprexa for dementia related treatments. Using Zyprexa for such treatments might cause heart failure or sudden death. In some patient it might cause pneumonia. If you already suffer from liver disease, kidney disorders, high cholesterol, history of stroke, diabetes, seizures, glaucoma, and difficulty in urinating the dosage of Zyprexa might need to be adjusted according to your condition. Do reveal these conditions to your physician before taking Zyprexa. This medication might slow down your motor skills and your alertness. So do not drive when you are under the influence of this drug.
