Zyrtec the brand name of the drug has Cetirizine hydrochloride as the active ingredient. This drug is available in the form of tablets, chewable tablets and syrup. Prescription is not needed to buy this drug. Cetirizine hydrochloride is water soluble and white crystalline powder. The tablets are film coated and available in strengths of 5 mg and 10 mg. Zyrtec in chewable form is also available in strengths of 5 mg and 10 mg. The Zyrtec syrup concentration is 1 mg/mL. The tablets are available in bottles of 100 and the chewable tablets are packed in blister cards. The Zyrtec syrup is available in 120 mL and 480 mL bottles.
Zyrtec is used in the treatment of symptoms associated with seasonal allergic rhinitis. This is caused by allergens like grass, tree pollens, and ragweed. Symptoms like nasal itching, ocular itching, sneezing, and tearing are found in such cases. Zyrtec is also used in the treatment of Perennial allergic rhinitis and Chronic Urticaria. Zyrtec can be taken after food or before food. 5 mg or 10 mg per day is the recommended dosage of persons above 12 years. 10 mg in single dose can be taken at a time that is convenient to the patient. For children from 6 years to 11 years you can give 5 mg or 10 mg based on the severity of the condition. For children up to 5 years 2.5 mL syrup equivalent to 2.5 mg can be given once daily. For this age group the maximum dosage is 5 mg per day. This dosage is for every 12 hours. For patients with renal impairment and patients older than 77 years a dosage of 2.5 mg is recommended per day.
Side effects like drowsiness, fatigue, headaches, dry mouth, dizziness, and nausea are found in some patients. Patients should not indulge in activities that require mental alertness after taking this medication. Pregnant women should not take unless it is absolutely necessary. Nursing women should not take this drug as Cetirizine is excreted in the milk. Patients with renal problems should not take this drug.
